With that side smile and nervous laugh, Bruce Dern remains instantly recognizable, yet he was rarely cast as the star and nearly always as the villain. In The Driver, getaway driver (Ryan O’Neal) has become an obsession of a detective (Dern), who enlists the help of a player (Isabelle Adjani) to ensnare him.
