For a (slightly) older generation, tracking down a VHS copy of 1975’s Dolemite was an event—one of those “in the know” references in a pre-streaming world. In 2019, the Rudy Ray Moore biopic Dolemite Is My Name starred Eddie Murphy as the comedian, whose nightclub-owning, wise-cracking, kung-fu pimp would one day be a legend. Tonight, the martial arts movie appreciation group Genre Brain Melt is giving us a chance to see Dolemite, Queen Bee, and the kung-fu call girls in all their glory on the big screen. Keep an eye peeled for the infamous boom mic appearances and my personal favorite, the trunk kick. You’ll know it when you see it.
