Gamut Gallery is opening its first exhibit of 2023, with a “retro” aesthetic throwback theme. With the help of Minnesota artists Genie Castro and Nicole Mueller, as well as SoCal artists Human Shaped Animal and Neal Breton, the new multimedia exhibit, “Astroturf,” takes on the synthetic, unblemished world of mid-century Southern California Suburbia with an eye on its contemporary relevance. This exhibit examines, per the Gamut website, the influence of “SoCal architecture, pop art, and post-painterly abstraction” on today’s consumer culture, offering a postmodernist take on a modernist reality. There will be original prints, sculpture, and a curated selection of furniture on display capturing the mood and impact of this highly influential era in pop culture. And of course, there is sure to be stretches of artificial, tediously manicured grass.
